They say everything is bigger in Texas – and that’s certainly true for Chris Young’s new show, which premieres on Saturday in San Antonio.
The singer offered a sneak peek this week at his new stage show, which he calls his first “real production”: it features a much bigger set than his previous concerts, state-of-the-art lights, hydraulics, giant video screens and an elevated catwalk. Oh, and two semis shrink-wrapped with his likeness to haul everything around. “It’s a little weird for me to look at my face that big,” Young jokes to PEOPLE.
As he prepares to hit the road this summer with a mix of headlining shows and opener dates for Dierks Bentley, Young admits he’s come a long way from his struggling artist days, touring the country in a van and toting his own equipment. “I’m not having to drive and figure out GPS anymore either, which is nice,” he says.
However, the “Who I Am with You” singer will be relying on another part of his past to help him through one aspect of the show – that elevated catwalk. “It’s nine feet up in the air, which doesn’t sound like a lot, until you’re nine feet up in the air,” he shares. “I did some construction work when I was younger, working on roofs and on ladders, but I definitely don’t like heights.”
Preparation is key, he says. “I definitely won’t be wearing new shoes or anything slippery,” he promises. “And we’ll say a little prayer backstage that we don’t fall!” Find out when you can catch Young on tour.
