This family man’s life is about to change.
“It’s been a lot of sacrifice to be away from [my family] and to go through this whole process not only for me but for them,” Josh Kaufman told PEOPLE shortly after winning the sixth season of The Voice Tuesday night. “It definitely makes it all worthwhile.”
The father of three – who was a member of local band The New Etiquette and worked as an SAT tutor in Indianapolis before coming on the show – is excited to help create a life for his loved ones “doing what I love.”
“It’s kind of a win-win,” he added.
Coach Usher, who beat out Blake Shelton and Adam Levine for the first time in Voice history, gave the Maroon 5 frontman a bit of credit for discovering Kaufman, who started off the competition on Levine’s team.
“I haven’t seen Adam yet. I think he might be behind the scenes counting votes,” the singer joked. “Obviously, I wouldn’t have found my way towards the win without Adam recognizing Josh’s talent.”
Asked for his thoughts about being bested by Usher, Shelton graciously acknowledged the winning coach’s talents for nurturing young talent such as Justin Bieber before turning back to his competitive self: “Now I will go on and say that crap ain’t ever gonna happen again.”
Added Levine, simply: “I concur!”
No Hard Feelings from Jake Worthington
First runner-up Jake Worthington, who auditioned for season 5 but failed to turn any chairs around at the time, had no hard feelings.
“It means the whole world [to come this far],” he said. “[Blake] opened up the gateway for me, and he’s pretty much had his hand on my back the whole time. I’m proud of that. You cannot take any of this away from me or from anybody else. This is such a win all in itself.”
Another big winner of the night was third-place finisher Christina Grimmie, who found out earlier in the night that Levine would sign her to his label if she didn’t win.
Telling reporters his announcement would “100 percent” come to fruition, Levine gushed about his “incredible” new artist.
“It’s so hard to have traction as a singer and to have the YouTube following that she had,” he said. “All the things she had in place before The Voice are the hardest things for an artist to get. This girl is going to have a good career, and I’d love to be a part of it.”
