He might be a 15-year pro football veteran, but Michael Strahan is still surprised that he’s about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
“It’s one of those things where I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe it,’ ” the former New York Giants defensive end tells PEOPLE. “It was actually very amazing and very scary at the same time.”
Though lots of pressure is put on the speech he’ll have to give, the morning cohost and new Meta spokesperson – he’s a big fan of the new products from the makers of Metamucil – plans to wing it when he steps on stage.
“I want to kind of go up there and be free and not worry about giving the speech of a lifetime,” he says. “I think a lot of guys sit and write and write and write because everyone tries to outdo the other with the speeches. I don’t care for that. I just want to make sure I thank the right people, make sure we all have a good time.”
Despite feeling a bit of anxious energy before Saturday’s ceremony, nerves are nothing new to the TV host.
“I get nervous before FOX NFL Sunday, I get nervous before Live!, I get nervous before GMA. I get nervous before I brush my teeth,” Strahan jokes. “Everybody gets a little nervous. I’m no different than anyone else. I think the key is to shake that nervousness and turn it into production.”
