Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato seem to have it all. As stars of the hottest Disney Channel shows – like Wizards of Waverly Place and Sonny With a Chance, respectively – the 16-year-olds are on a fast track to mega-fame. So what's keeping them grounded? Their pets, of course! In PEOPLE's special issue, Best Friends: Selena & Demi, the stars open up about the loving pups they call their own.

Selena Gomez & Willie
"We rescued Willie when he was 1," Selena says of her 4-year-old dog, whose breed is unknown. "He was abandoned in the backyard of my grandmother's neighbor's house." The family has four other dogs: 6-year-old Wallace, a German shepherd-boxer mix; Chip, 6, a Welsh corgi; Fina, a 5-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback; and, most recently, they adopted Chazz, a mutt Selena rescued in Puerto Rico while filming a Wizards of Waverly Place movie.

While on location, the actress worked with the organization Island Dog, which helps medicate and feed stray dogs on the beaches of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. “He got hit by a car and had a broken leg,” says Selena says of Chazz. “We kept him in our hotel room and gave him a bath and fed him, and ended up flying him to our house!” The self-professed “huge animal lover” sees many more dogs in her future. "When I live on my own," she says, "I think I'll have five!"

Demi Lovato & Bailey
Five years ago, the Lovato family inherited puppy Bailey from her original owner, who happened to be the ex-boyfriend of Demi's sister Dallas, now 21. "She's a great dog. She's adorable," the Sonny With a Chance star gushes. "I love her." What's not to love? The mixed breed is the perfect companion for Demi to take on long walks on the beach and to snuggle up with in front of the living room TV.

So, will Bailey hit the road with Demi this summer when she goes on tour? "I wish," she says. "But she's a little bit too big for the tour bus. But we just got another dog, named Bella. She's a shih tzu puppy – we'll bring her."
