TV chef Sandra Lee is devastated by the loss of her dog, Aspen, who died Monday from kidney failure and other complications. The pooch was 16.
The host of the Food Network's
Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee tells PEOPLEPets.com that Aspen was a Christmas gift, delivered in 1993 when the puppy was just 6 weeks old. She was named after Lee's favorite Christmas song, "Aspenglo," by John Denver.
"Her paws were pink for the first year of her life because I was afraid she would get sick," Lee says. "I made her food for the first two years of her life — chicken with brown rice and broccoli."
Aspen, an American Eskimo, traveled with Lee everywhere she went, whether it was the office, where she would sit in Lee's chair whenever it went unoccupied, or the outdoors, where she would camp, hike, jet ski and run on the beach with her owner. They would even wear matching outfits, with Aspen donning colored bandanas to coordinate with Lee's clothing.
Lee sent out an email tribute after the dog's death. It read, "In loving memory of Aspen, may she enchant and delight all the angels in heaven as she did everyone who knew her here on earth."

Sandra, no one can replace Aspen. He was special and closer to you than anybody else. This is a big loss. In time when you are ready, think about adopting a rescued dog. You have so much love to give and such a wonderful home to share with another.

Sending prayers and condolences to Sandra and her family over the loss of Aspen.
There are few words to describe the pain, sorrow and sadness we feel when we have to say goodbye to a dear and devoted animal companion.
Many people are more overwhelmed by the loss of an animal than some of the humans in their lives.
We bond so closely with our animals and in some cases we have to make that impossible decision to help them transition (pass away).
Just know that our animals are still connected to us even after they transition and will often tell me about things going on in the household after their passing.
I'm sure Aspen is still watching over her beloved family.
With prayers and blessings around Aspen ...may she rest peacefully in the arms of angels.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog. I don't know why it's so painful to lose them. I think they understand us more than we realize and give us unconditional love. They don't care what we look like, they just love us. I lost my Lab, Bear, in June of 2009 and I"m still upset. I'm very sorry and my condolences to you.

I am so sorry and send my deepest sympathies on your loss of Aspen. I had two cats from the size of my palm to 18 years and 21 years respectively and now they are bothat the "Rainbow Bridge" along with my 7 year old dog that just dropped dead in our back yard about 7 months ago! I hope that you can find some comfort from all of these dear people that have lost members of their family as well as that is what a true pet is! Pet owners need to be responsible and take their pets to the doctor when sick just like we do our kids! Again, I am so sorry for your loss and God Bless You!

Hi Sandra,
Having lost a beloved pet, I know what you are going through. May you take comfort in knowing that Aspen is no longer suffering and I truly believe that you will be reunited with her one day. If I didn't believe that, I don't think that I could go on. You are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless You!

Hi Sandra~ I watch your show all of the time. I am so very sorry for the loss of Aspen. I do believe that dogs go to heaven, and they watch over us. She has crossed over Rainbow Bridge. I just lost my pit bull, Lady in July, and have had dogs all my life and I'm 50, so I know how you are feeling right now. Take it day by day, and it always helped me to get another one. They just fill that awful void you are feeling right now. Of course no other dog will ever take her place, they all have different personalities, but do consider it. Again, my prayers are with you, and Aspen will always be around watching you cook, and just hanging around without you even knowing it. Blessings sent your way, Kelley Eubanks

Sandra, all my sympathy. Those little white fur balls really grab hold of your heart. I lost my first Amer. Eskie to cancer when he was 10. I have a min. Amer. Eskie named Kiwi now and she is getting older, 13 with diabeties. She is my best bud and I know how you feel. I believe in the Rainbow Bridge and know she will be waiting happy and well to see you when its time.
