Spotted: Hello, Birdie! Prince William Cradles a Feathered Kiwi

Anwar Hussein/Landov

Last week Prince William got his pilot "wings," and on Monday, he got close to some real ones while visiting New Zealand. The monarch was snapped holding a Kiwi Bird — New Zealand's national symbol — at the Kapiti Island Nature Reserve, while surrounded by onlookers. An endangered species, the birds are actually flightless, though they have a heightened sense of smell thanks to nostrils on their beaks. (Hope Prince William smelled nice!)

The Prince is in Australia and New Zealand on an unofficial tour, his second ever (he went Down Under with his parents when he was an infant). So far, he's visited various hospitals and community centers around both countries, and plans to tour areas devastated by last year's bushfires on behalf of his grandmother, the Queen of England.
