Willie Nelson wants to know: "Why are there more horses asses than there are horses?"
The country legend's gripe comes from his concern for the American West's wild horses and burros, which are being rounded up by the thousands and placed into holding corrals by the federal government's
Bureau of Land Management. The
capture of 2,500 horses started in the Calico Mountains of Nevada last month, but the agency expects to round up a total of 12,000 of the estimated 37,000 horses on BLM land by the end of this year.
Nelson, who himself owns 68 horses (30 of which were rescued and prevented from slaughter) isn't the only celebrity speaking in defense of the animals. Nelson's daughter Amy,
singer Sheryl Crow, actors
Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, as well as former Playboy models Shane and Sia Barbi, have all signed letters to Congress and the President pleading for the horses' cause.
Amy Nelson, who grew up with horses, finds last month's Calico Mountain roundup especially cruel. "The fact that they're rounding them up in the dead of winter, it's really the worst time —not that there's ever a good time," Nelson tells PEOPLEPets.com. "The horses are in captivity, and they're freezing out there. They need to run around in order to stay warm — it just doesn't make any sense."
BLM spokesman Tom Gorey says the roundups are needed because the horses, which roam across BLM land in Nevada, Utah and Colorado, have essentially become overpopulated, and that larger numbers will be detrimental to the land and its resources.
"The land is shared by wildlife, and we're trying to get the number of wild horses and burros down to an appropriate management level," Gorey tells PEOPLEPets.com. "Our overall objective is to ensure that there's healthy range lands for multiple uses, including oil and gas development, and outdoor recreation."
Gorey says the agency and its director,
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, are hoping to get to a place where the horses will eventually be adopted out. The costs of keeping the animals in corrals, which are near capacity, keep mounting; 70 percent of the agency's $40.6 million budget goes toward holding costs. But the market for adopting wild horses is declining.
"Adopting a wild horse — you can't even get them in the trailer," Nelson says. "People would be adopting a highly traumatized animal that's huge. There's no market for people to adopt them unless they're a really kind millionaire, but there's not a lot of those anymore, either."
Critics suggest that the idea of multiple-use land is what's driving the BLM roundup — in other words, larger interests are at stake. Ginger Kathrens of
The Cloud Foundation, which works to prevent the extinction of wild horse herds, believes that the BLM is clearing horses off public land to make way for the
Ruby Pipeline, a natural gas project that will operate through the Rocky Mountains.
Chris Heyde of the
Animal Welfare Institute, which lobbies against animal cruelty, points to large livestock grazing operations and cattle ranchers that have sway with the government. Though he is on the front lines of lobbying and activism himself, Heyde feels that he might be fighting a losing battle.
Kathrens disagrees. The Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, whose documentary about a mustang named Cloud drew attention to the horses, and who first brought friend Sheryl Crow's attention to the issue, says there's still time to save many of the remaining horses, as long as there's enough public outcry.
"The bottom line is that this agency has got to come clean," Kathrens says. "They have to be made accountable at Congressional hearings. I think we're just being hoodwinked and losing something so
precious and spectacular."

BLM is out of control and violating the law. They have stolen 20 million designated acres from the horses. Helicopter roundups are cruel and injure and kill. They do not care for captured horses properly. Cattle vastly outnumber horses and they destroy the range, all the while being subsidized by taxpayers. The welfare rancher program cost the taxpayer 10 million dollars last year. The horses are not starving. They are being reduced to herd sizes which are not genetically viable. Just read research done by Craig Downer, wildlife ecologist and wild horse expert. The horse evolved here. DNA research by Fitzpatrick and Fazio prove he is a Native Species. He is an integral piece of the North American natural environment. I run a sanctuary full of damaged mustangs and formerly wild burros. This is a national disgrace! Stop the roundups! THE BLM HAS ALWAYS, AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE BAD GUYS!! SINCE THE SPANISH WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND THIS COUNTRY, AND EXPLORE IT, WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH WILD HORSE RACING ACROSS OUR TERRAIN!! THE WESTERN UNITED STATES HAS ALWAYS BEEN SO WONDERFUL. AS A CHILD, I WAS LUCKY TO HAVE A FATHER WHO DEEMED WE SHOULD EXPLORE IT ALL. IF YOU HAVE EVER SEEN A WOLF PACK CHASING A BUCK ON THE NORTH RIM OF THE GRAND CANYON AT SUNRISE, YOU ARE AMONG THE FEW, ROOTING FOR THE DEER!! HAVING GROWN TO ADULTHOOD IN OKLAHOMA, I WAS ON HORSE BACK BEFORE I COULD WALK, AS WERE MY CHILDREN. JUST A PART OF LIFE! HORSES ARE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT, LOVING ANIMALS. HAVING RAISED SEVERAL, AND TRAINED MORE, I CAN TESTIFY FIRST HAND, THEY ARE NOT STUDID!! IF YOU THINK THIS, THEN YOU PROBABLY THINK DOGS ARE STUDID TOO! BOY, DO YOU NEED A LESSON IN REAL LIFE. THE "PERSONS" THAT HAVE THE POWERS AT THE "BLM" ARE IDIOTS! THEY ARE ALLOWING CATTLE PERMITS ON OUR OWNED LAND. THIS MEANS TO ME THAT WE ARE FEEDING, FOR FREE, THE RANCHERS CATTLE, THAT THEY OBVIOUSLY CAN NOT AFFORD TO FEED ON THEIR OWN. THAT MEANS THEY HAVE TOO MANY COWS!!! IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO FEED YOUR CATTLE WITHOUT STEALING FROM THE AMERICAN PUPLIC, YOU HAVE TOO MANY!!! PUT THEM IN SARAN WRAP AT THE LOCAL GROCERY STORE, MAYBE THE PRICE WILL GO DOWN! CATTLE RANCHERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN...ME, ME, ME!!! HAVING WORKED A CATTLE RANCH, I MAY KNOW ABOUT THAT. KNOWING HORSES, I SAY LET THEM ALONE. IF THE FOOD GETS SHORT, THEY WILL LOOK ELSWHERE. WHY NOT ROUND UP THE BUFFALO IN YELLOWSTONE SO THEY CAN DRILL FOR OIL, OR CAGE ALL THE BEARS IN OCALA NATIONAL FOREST, SO THEY (THE GOVT) LOOK FOR ANOTHER SOURCE FOR NATUARL GAS?? OR THEY (THE GOVT) COULD CUT ALL THE TREES IN YOSEMITE FOR A NEW WHITEHOUSE IN HIWAII?? LEAVE THE WILD HORSES ALONE, AND LET THEM DO WHAT WILD ANIMALS DO. PLEASE TELL BLM TO GET THE HELL OUT OF THE EQUATION! WILD HORSES ARE JUST THAT, WILD HORSES, LEAVE THEM ALONE! THE BLM IS RUN BY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE THE FIRST CLUE ABOUT WILD LIFE MANAGEMENT. THEY ARE IDIOTS WHOM SEEM TO THINK WE ARE NOT WATCHING, BUT WE ARE. ALL OF OUR IDIOTS NEED TO BE WATCHED!! WISH I HAD MR. OBAMAS EMAIL ADDRESS, SO I COULD TELL WHAT I THINK!! GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE LAND AND ISN'T TAKING BRIBS FROM CATTLE BARRONS TO GRAZE THEIR CATTLE FOR FREE!! LEAVE THE WILD HORSES ALONE TO WHAT THEY DO!!! I AM SO DONE WITH GVMT CRAP, I COULD JUST SPIT, AND MY GRANDMOTHER SAID THAT WAS WRONG. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO EMAIL ME IT IS KLA8758@GMAIL.COM. I HAVE PROOF I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN THIS COUNTRY THAT I LOVE!!! KLA

BLM needs to be under criminal investigation. A committee needs to be appointed and obviously someone not employed by the government to do an extensive and indepth investigation of the BLM management. I think the US public would be shocked at what has been going on.

First I'd like to address the issue of adopting a mustang. This article makes it sound like it's something that's impossible or unrealistic. The BLM does do things to help make adoptions more assessable and appealing. For example, the adoption fee of a wild horse is $125. That's it. And lately they've been doing a thing where if you adopt a mustang for $125, you can adopt a second mustang for $25. TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS! That doesn't require a "millionare". I understand that horses still cost money to feed and keep, but as a horse owner myself, I can tell you it's doable even on the smallest of incomes. It depends where you put your priorities on where your money goes.
Not only are the adoption fees for a mustang minimal, you can also adopt them over the INTERNET. Go to blm.gov/adoptahorse, and pick and choose the one you want! Sometimes the horses available have already been gentled by a trainer, so you have the option of getting one that's not wild. Easy, right?
Ever heard of "Extreme Mustang Makeover"? It's a huge competition where trainers take mustangs, train them, and compete to see who trained the mustangs the best. Afterward, ALL of these mustangs that have been trained are available for adoption. It's been a great way to raise awareness to people about these beautiful animals, and make adopting them all the more easy.
The BLM has been rounding up mustangs for years. They have to do some heard management, otherwise there wouldn't be enough food for all of them. Rather than make them all struggle, they take some out and let the others continue to thrive. This option is much better than the alternative, like they do with other animals. When there is too much deer, they give out more hunting licenses so the people kill and do the heard management on their own. Instead of hunting the horses to manage overpopulation, they make them available for adoption into loving homes. Much better, wouldn't you say?
Now, I understand that the BLM may be taking the lands away from the mustangs, and rounding up more than necessary. THAT I am willing to protest. But not all of these roundups are bad.
My opinion of the best way to help is to adopt one of these amazing animals. Also, make sure the government is rounding up the minimal amount necessary. But don't freak out if you see one roundup. Know the facts. Thanks!

Privately owned welfare cattle on our public land are the problem along with the BLM -who only serve the cattle industries interests. The cattle are causing all the damage - 9 MILLION OF THEM there is less than 30,000 horses -- you do the math -THERE IS NO WILD HORSE OVERPOPULATION. 9 MILLION privately owed welfare cattle overpopulate our lands!! It is not enough for welfare cattle interests to destroy our public lands and ripoff the American taxpayers-in addition they insist on terrorizing and wiping out our beloved wild horses. It is almost incomprehensible except when you look at all the other atrocities that have been perpetrated against American Indians, wildlife and our land. http://www.handmadenews.org/article/index.php?id=995 http://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox/126336f57e82ba91

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues to defy the Wild Horse and Burro Act, 1971.
Nearly 20 million acres of wild horse habitat has been taken away. This 20 million acres was designated by Congress as PROTECTED WILD HORSE HABITAT. And there are an estimated 8 million livestock, but ONLY 37,000 horses and burros grazing on OUR public lands. The BLM has issued more cattle grazing permits on land designated for the wild horses. The federal government spends approximately $123 million per year to manage private livestock grazing.
Livestock (cattle) production is the MOST widespread and destructive activity on arid and semi-arid western landscapes. However, the saying "money talks" certainly seems to be true in this case, as many of the cattle permit holders are millionaire cattlemen and big agribusinesses who benefit from this "welfare ranching."
With approximately 33,000 of OUR wild horses in long term holding, and the BLM is rounding-up another 12,000? Why? Ken Salazar's idea of adoption has FAILED MISERABLY. Adopting a beautiful wild horse is a luxury that most people, even though they would love to, simply cannot afford. The BLM does not have a responsible, acceptable and humane idea what they are going to do with 33,000 already in holding. Why on earth are they rounding up more horses to add to this problem?
The BLM is an irresponsible, dishonest government agency. Their timing of roundups, their method of roundups, their transport methods, their stockpiling of our wild horses, their selling to slaughter buyers.....and many, many equine deaths on their hands. But somehow they are allowed to continue?
Put OUR wild horses back on the 20 million acres you took from them. This land was designated for the Wild Horses and Burros. And RETIRE Federal grazing permits. I find it appalling that I, as a taxpayer, am paying the BLM to ruin an integral and important part of my heritage.
We need immediate hearings on the BLM's Wild Horse and Burro Project. We need an immediate moratorium on roundups!!!
P.S. I have yet to see a wild horse that looks like it is starving. All look nourished and athletic. This is a crime!

Normal 0 It just completely escapes me how the fate of the Wild Horses even got as bad as it has in this friggin’ country! I mean folks may have issues about Dogs, not everybody likes Cats (I do!!) but dang, is there anyone out there on the entire planet that does not like (even love?) Horses??? My operative answer is going to be NO. Everyone loves Horses… everyone likes seeing em’… it just natural… at least of course for Folks with some resemblance of a Soul remaining. For others so highly concerned these Horses will be competing with they’re Cattle on Public Grazing Lands, and a parasitic Government consisting of tiny little bloodsucking Individuals all guarding they’re piece of the pie… it’ll be open season on the beautiful Horses until such time (soon) the Creeps finally succeed in destroying every last one of em’.
How friggin’ nice for em’…. BUT who’s truly the most guilty of all?? Why, it’s all of us my friends! At least these Cattle Ranchers and the Biological Government Infestations that assist them have a legitimate excuse: they ARE after all beings without Conscience nor Souls….. it’s all about the Money and Power…. How could they do otherwise?? But for those of us out here who love Horses – worship them in awe though we ourselves may never know the joy of having one share our life much less for riding… we feel these things and yet have allowed these atrocities against nature to continue all these decades?? WE are supposed to be in control of this Country, this Government, these Horses are in fact are OURS, as the people who reside within (and put up with all the nonsense, including annual Federal Tax Filings!!) the United States of America! I say NO more of this, absolutely NO more…. Leave the Horses where they are – leave them the hell alone!! Man, it don’t get NO easier then that – just leave em’ the hell alone!! Works for me… seriously!!
