Success! Marvin the One-Eyed Cat Finds a Forever Home
Two weeks ago we introduced you to Marvin, a one-eyed tuxedo cat living in Dearborn, Mich. He'd been at the Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter since June, after he was rescued out of a hoarding situation. Well, good news: Just two days after we profiled him, the little guy was adopted!
Dearborn-area resident Robert Muczynski had recently put one of his two cats down, and was ready for a new feline friend. "I only had him for three years," he tells PEOPLEPets.com. "I got him after I had to put another cat down. Last month, he developed some complications, and the vet diagnosed him with liver failure. Sadly, the writing was on the wall."
Once he felt "psychologically ready" to welcome a new cat into his home, Muczynski, a big supporter of Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter, went on the organization's Web site to look for the perfect cat — by his standards. "I joke that I generally go for the 'biggest loser,' the cat who's been there the longest," he says.
Adopt Me! Kitty Baby Is On the Lookout for Love
For every pet living with a happy family, there is an animal in a shelter waiting to find a loving home. So today, in honor of Adopt a Senior Pet month, we'd like you to meet Baby, a 10-year-old tortoiseshell cat living at the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
Indoor kitty Baby was brought to the League in September by a local landlord after her owner — a renter — passed away. Quiet, laid-back and gentle, the affectionate feline is "always on the lookout for love," says director of communications Jennifer Wooliscroft. Shelter staffers are hoping to place Baby in a quiet home, where she's the only house pet. "It may take some time for her to warm up, but then she's happy for the attention and affection," Wooliscroft explains. She loves being rubbed on the chin and the head, and interestingly, her patterned fur is considered a symbol of good luck in several cultures!
Pop Band Honor Society (and Their Dog!) Find a Fan in ASPCA
When hitting the road for their Full Moon Crazy tour this fall, the guys of the pop group Honor Society — the first band signed to the Jonas Brothers' new record label — knew they could count on one loyal roadie: their dog Willis. The rescued miniature poodle is a part of the band's family — and a tough critic. "She hears a lot of Honor Society songs before anyone else," bass guitarist Andrew Lee tells PEOPLEPets.com. "If we see her tail wagging, we know it's a good lyric."
The pup, who's even appeared in some of the guy's goofy YouTube clips, has earned a following of her own. "Our fans love her! She gets more gifts at our meet-and-greets than we do," says vocalist Michael Bruno. "She's received dog Snuggies, sweaters and even a Wonder Woman costume."
Taking to Twitter to tell their fans about their pooch — plus other products and info — comes naturally for the group. So when they were approached by Ubisoft about teaming up with the ASPCA to promote November's Sharing and Caring pet-care initiative, it seemed like a natural fit. "Our relationship with our fans is like a friendship — it's like, 'Hey guys, check this out'," Bruno says. "So it's easy to share our thoughts with them through Twitter and MySpace, and hear what they have to say in return."
Did Fluffy Steal Your Heart? TV Special Explores Bond Between Pet and Owner
Six nights a week, Gregory Popovich stuns Las Vegas audiences with his "Comedy Pet Theater" routine. Using well-trained rescue animals, the Russian circus performer leads crazy stunts — like cats jumping rope and dogs competing in physical education class.
Producer Jim Friedman found Popovich's story so compelling that he included it in the new TV special Tales for the Pet Lover's Heart, airing Sunday at 11 a.m. ET on WGN America. Tales focuses on the bond between six humans and their pets, including a fire captain, a surfing owner-dog duo (above) and more. "The people we looked for are regular people, but they really do love their pets as if they're part of the family," Friedman tells PEOPLEPets.com. "And what's amazing is while they're doing these extraordinary things to help animals in need, they stay completely humble."
Adopt Me! Steve the Cat Will Listen to Your Every Word
For every pet living with a happy family, there is an animal in a shelter waiting to find a loving home. So today, in honor of Adopt a Senior Pet month, we'd like you to meet Steve, a 15-year-old cat who's thriving at Furkids in Atlanta, Ga.
Steve came to Furkids in early 2007, after a woman who was feeding the stray kitty had to move to Texas. A year ago, his thyroid became diseased, and he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. "Because of his age, we thought daily oral medication would be the best treatment," says shelter founder and director Samantha Shelton. "But he was not thriving, and still losing weight." Volunteers raised money to send Steve to RadioCat, where he received radioactive treatment. "He's now off his meds and we are delighted to see the progress he's made," says Shelton. Currently sporting a healthy coat — and a healthy body weight — Steve "likes to have conversations with you, and is a good listener," Shelton says. He loves food, particularly his wet food, and of course copious treats. "He has many more years to give the loving family who will care for him in his old age," Shelton promises.
Pets (and People!) Step Up for Day 5 of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week
Happy National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! This week, Nov. 1-7, is the time to show our local rescues and shelters how much we appreciate the work they do. We've teamed up with Romeo the Cat and Big Paw Designs to recognize animals and the people who are making a difference in their community.
With days running out, it's important to thank all the readers who submitted their acts of kindness to Romeo — as well as the countless others who volunteer their time and affection for shelter pets every day!
Stars Put Pets First, Even on the Green Carpet, for N.Y.C. Charity Gala
It was a night where even the pets got to dress up: On the green carpet of artificial grass at the North Shore Animal League's 4th Annual DogCatemy Celebrity Gala, Martha Stewart's French bulldogs Francesca and Sharkey arrived decked out in black and white striped T-shirts alongside Mom.
"We love attending events like this to raise money for a good cause," Stewart told guests at the New York City fund-raiser and pet awards show, modeled after Hollywood's glitzy Academy Awards and held in the airy dining room at Cipriani, a chic Italian restaurant on Wall Street.
"It's a lot of fun," radio personality Howard Stern told PEOPLEPets.com. "It's a great event." Stern escorted his wife, Beth Ostrosky Stern, a longtime animal lover and spokesperson for the North Shore Animal League (NSAL), the largest no-kill animal shelter in the world. But where was Bianca, their 8-year-old bulldog? "She's at home, and her full name is Bianca Romijn Stamos O'Connell," Stern joked.
