Adopt Me! Steve the Cat Will Listen to Your Every Word

For every pet living with a happy family, there is an animal in a shelter waiting to find a loving home. So today, in honor of Adopt a Senior Pet month, we'd like you to meet Steve, a 15-year-old cat who's thriving at Furkids in Atlanta, Ga.

Steve came to Furkids in early 2007, after a woman who was feeding the stray kitty had to move to Texas. A year ago, his thyroid became diseased, and he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. "Because of his age, we thought daily oral medication would be the best treatment," says shelter founder and director Samantha Shelton. "But he was not thriving, and still losing weight." Volunteers raised money to send Steve to RadioCat, where he received radioactive treatment. "He's now off his meds and we are delighted to see the progress he's made," says Shelton. Currently sporting a healthy coat — and a healthy body weight — Steve "likes to have conversations with you, and is a good listener," Shelton says. He loves food, particularly his wet food, and of course copious treats. "He has many more years to give the loving family who will care for him in his old age," Shelton promises.

Furkids operates the largest cage-free, no-kill animal shelter in Georgia. The organization was founded in 2002, when Shelton came upon a stray mother cat and kittens but was unable to find a shelter that would take them in. Though it began as a network of foster homes, today, Furkids houses 200 cats in its cage-free shelter (dogs are kept with foster families), and runs adoption centers in five Atlanta PetSmarts and two area PETCOs. Since its inception, the organization has saved more than 5,000 animals.
