'Last Chance Highway' Takes the South's Stray Dogs to New Homes

"They're coming today; I'm not leaving 'em — period," Bookwalter said. With that, she scooped up the puppies and brought the mama dog to her truck.
But the dogs were no strays. In fact, the dogs' owner was nearby. He told her the puppies were headed for his grandchildren, and he wasn't about to give them up. These canines are likely to be some of the few Bookwalter has ever left behind.
The scene opens the first episode of Animal Planet's new series, Last Chance Highway, which features Bookwalter's work in finding new homes for America's Southern states' chronic dog overpopulation. Working with pet transporter Kyle Peterson and country singer Lucas Hoge, Bookwalter moves stray and homeless pets from certain death to new lives and homes with owners in the Northeast.
"I always had a soft heart for the strays," she tells PEOPLEPets.com. "I happen to be born with a spirit to help animals."
Since she was a teenager, Bookwalter has spent her own funds to treat sick animals and find new homes for stray ones. She estimates that she spends around $75,000 each year on rescuing dogs, and luckily, her success as a real estate agent has largely funded her work.
"I'm never not selling homes or rescuing dogs," she says. "I could be sleeping, and still selling homes and adopting dogs out."
Peterson provides the wheels — two trailers that his company, P.E.T.S. Transport Service, uses to move pets from shelters and pounds in the South to homes in places like New York and New Hampshire. Peterson started the company with his wife in 2004, and now transports about 6,000 dogs each year.
"Any given week, we transport 150 dogs at one time between the two trailers," Peterson says. "It's a full-time, 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week business."
And the number of dogs that Peterson is asked to transport each year only grows, thanks to a greater awareness in the rescue community about how to find new homes for dogs. Still, Peterson wants that number to get down to zero.
"If we could put ourselves out of business, meaning that there's not an overpopulation problem anymore in our shelters," she says, "then we've done our job."

Well Denise, I'm surprised they wasted that much time on you. I couldn't agree with them more. I've seen every episode and when I saw the coat in question, I assumed it was fake until told otherwise. It would make sense to a rational person to assume that given this woman's mission. Youare indeed the typical radical who accuses and threatens before even asking the question, otherwise known as jamming your foot down your throat. I am so sick of ppl like yourself who are more interested in pushing your views (right or wrong) to the extent it actually hurts animals. Which is exactly what you'd be doing by wanting this show canceled. If I found out she wore real fur, I too would be disgusted, but the difference is, I can SEE that canceling the show would never be the answer. No I am not willing to see her lose money to help more dogs because she owns a fur coat. And any "true" animal lover would agree. This is the same thing as those who want cat declawing outlawed with no thought to how many good homes will therefore dry up when the choice is gone. There are times when the intention may be good, but the result is disasterous. But again, those ppl care more about their views then the animals affected. I would have been embarrassed to even post DD's response as it shows how "raving and wrong" you are. I am glad however that someone took you to task for your letter rather than politely responding...you deserved every word of it. Never ceases to amaze me how theirs always some ppl out there who will trash a show no matter how much good it does. Turn the channel, Shelly doesn't need you.

This is Double Dog Rescue response to me about shelly wearing fur
Denise, The fact of the matter is that Shelly is not wearing real fur. I Know radicals like you say that Shelly should not wear any fur real or not. But to say something stupid like Shelly lacks compassion for all animals is truly a statement made of true ignorance. You do not know Shelly, you only have your radical ideas to fall back on. To say that you are going to do all that you can to make sureShelly does not have a second season do to the fact that she wore fake fur will result in more animals being killed than it would ever save. What have you done in your life to save animals? Not wear fur? Give a donation? March in a protest? Shelly has saved thousands of dogs over the last 16 years and paid for it out of her own pocket with out any help from so called do-gooders like you. Do you live with 24 to 30 animals in your house? I doubt it. Do you spend at least half of every day running dogs to the vet and worrying weather some will survive heart worm treatments and major surgeries? People Like you mean well and do some good work, but for you to go off with a email like this is counter productive to everything you say that you stand for. Why don't you crawl off of your pedestal and reach out in a civilizedmanner to people like Shelly and talk about your feelings instead of going off and sounding stupid yourself. There is a wise saying that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, you may want to try this in the future.Sounds to me like you are a bit jealous of Shelly. By the way if you are so smart you may want to re-read the third line for your second paragraph. It makes no sense!! Double Dog Rescue
