The story of a dog tossed from the top of a six-story building has touched the hearts of many people living in the New York area and beyond. After Oreo the pit bull mix was thrown by her owner from the roof of his housing project in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 18, the pup — who suffered shattered limbs and other internal injuries — is on the mend and already getting offers for a new home.

"She's at the point now that she can stand. She's eating on her own," says Joseph Pentangelo, the assistant director of law enforcement for the ASPCA, who last saw Oreo on July 30. "She was bright and she was alert, she's excited to see people. Given what she's been through, I guess she's forgiving."

Oreo's owner, 19-year-old Fabian Henderson, had signed away rights to the dog and was arrested by ASPCA officials on Friday and charged with one felony count of aggravated animal cruelty, criminal trespass and reckless endangerment. Henderson is being held on $50,000 bail, Pentangelo says.

Shortly before the 45-lb. dog fell, residents called the ASPCA's cruelty hotline to report that they heard a dog being beaten on the premises. Minutes later, more eyewitnesses called to say the dog had been thrown off the roof of the Red Hook Houses in Brooklyn. Oreo was then rushed to the nearby Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group, where she was treated until stable. She was transferred to ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital a few days later where she underwent surgery for her leg injuries.

The dog's story, which was first reported by the New York Daily News, has prompted many to inquire about giving her a forever home.

"People are asking about adoption and things like that but we haven't even crossed that road yet because we are still dealing with her health issues," Pentangelo says. "Every vet that I've talked to about the case has expressed surprise that she has survived and is doing as well as she has. I've never seen a dog survive that."
