Petiquette: Should You Leave Your Dog Outside of a Store?
Dear Miss Fido Manners:
Each time I run an errand with my boyfriend, he wants me to tie my dog up outside of a store. What should I tell him?
Dear Fit To Be Tied:
Part of everyday living includes frequenting business establishments in your local community. The modern pet owner, especially those living in major metropolitan areas, likes to take her pet everywhere--even just on a trip to the dry cleaner. Whether you are shopping or running errands, please be mindful of your pet manners.
In the last few years, dogs have been allowed to accompany their owners to a myriad of stores and other businesses. Some establishments, like hair and nail salons as well as supermarkets, are not allowed to admit dogs due to health codes (unless the dogs are serving their disabled human beings). For the rest of us, it's always a good idea to telephone your destination and make certain that you are welcome with your dog. And if all else fails, depending on the size of your dog, a stylish carrier to hide your pooch is an absolute essential -- but, you didn’t hear that from Miss Fido!
Occasionally, we forget or don’t have a chance to inquire about a store's pet policy. If denied admittance, take your dog home and come back later. Sure, there are occasions when we don’t want to take our dog home or come back later, and we might be tempted to tie our pet outside the store. Don’t do it! And don't let you boyfriend convince you otherwise.
Please tenderly explain to him that you also love your pooch very much and that part of being a responsible pet owner is keeping your pet out of harm’s way. Tell him that it only takes a minute for your dog to be lost or stolen: Each year about 2 million dogs have gone missing from their homes and yards, parked cars and store fronts. Additionally, the presence of a dog in or near the portal of a store could deter other patrons from approaching the store, too.
Now, if your boyfriend doesn’t get it, it may be time to find an actual dog lover -- not dog leaver.
Happy Tails,
Miss Fido Manners

I would ask your boyfriend to stay outside to watch your dog whenever he suggests tying your dog up...it might cure him in time! Plus they can have some much-needed bonding ;)

Absolutely NOT!!! There are alot of bad people out there...they are called "bunchers" who actively search for stray or unsupervised dogs to steal to use for "bait" in dog fighting rings, to sell to laboratories for experiments and all kinds of other horrificthings. Besides the fact thatbeing unsupervisedleaves them susceptible to passersby bumping into them, stepping on their paws, or feeding them, being tied up in a place that is unfamiliar to them with strangers passing by may make them anxious and afraid. You wouldn't want to encourage a chance for someone to blame your dog for snapping or biting out of fear. My advice is...if you can't stay with your dog at all times...leave him home where he will be comfortable and safe.

Their are too many sick people out there. Would you leave your child outside to wait for you? I love my animals too much to take the chance.

I didn't really think about how dangerous it was... but that's a good point. I just know that my own anxiety... I could NEVER leave my pup alone like that without watching and standing next to her. Which I guess means I can't leave her alone unless she's home and safe.

In that situation I would have to inform the boyfriend you do not want to takeunsafe or risky chances with your dog, (your best friend), by doingsuchan irresponsible act. I then would be compelled to inform him you would like to tie him to a post for a short period, so you may pick up a few groceries. There is no excuse for his shameful advice.

I would never leave my dog tied up oustide a store! I always feel badly -- and nervous -- when I see dogs who have been left like that. I'd politely ask my boyfriend to watch my pup (or offer to do so myself if he runs in the store), or make a separate trek outside to walk my pet, and then run errands without him/her.
