While expressing an interest in becoming a mom – “just not during this tour” – Fergie has decided it is time to clean up her act and watch what she says on stage.
“I wasn’t trying to be a role model with The Dutchess,” the Black Eyed Peas singer, 34, tells August’s Marie Claire. Her change of heart – and vocabulary – came about after “seeing little girls in the audience with their moms. [It] made me think about what I do onstage a little bit more. I had to watch my mouth, because it can be filthy.”
It also turns out that Sasha Obama is one of those little girls, with Fergie recently learning that her hit, “Fergalicious,” is a favorite of the First Daughter.
And the singer also has a fan in the leader of the Free World himself. At this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll, Fergie recalls a conversation she had with Barack Obama, in which he expressed an affinity for one of her lines. “I can relate to the line ‘working on my fitness,’ ” she says the President told her.
The other adjustment she has made recently is to married life, saying that she and groom Josh Duhamel make a happy pair. “We order room service and watch our shows – we love The Daily Show.”
Or, she says, “I’ll lie out by the pool, and Josh hits golf balls to [their dachshund] Zoe as we listen to music. We’ll order Indian or Chinese, turn on the fire pit and talk about old times.”
She says she enjoys Duhamel’s company because she can let go with him. “At work I have to be a very strong, tough woman. But when I’m with him, I just turn on this baby girl voice. He’s my big tall man!”
She also says that after past relationship issues, it’s good to be secure.
“I’ve been in a lot of relationships that were exciting but unhealthy, very Sid-and-Nancy-esque,” she says, referring to doomed couple Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols and girlfriend Nancy Spungen. “I wanted somebody I could count on. [And] with all the craziness of this business, I know I can count on my man – and he knows he can count on me.”
