Recently, Marissa Jaret Winokur realized she needed a military intervention on her quest to lose weight. After reaching her low point when she scarfed down too much candy for son Zev’s first birthday party, the Dance Your Ass Off host, 36, decided to head to boot camp.
Here, in her weekly PEOPLE.com weight loss-blog, she writes about how her early morning call to drop and give ‘em 20 inspired her. Ten hut!
It’s been hard to motivate. On Monday and Tuesday I ate in line with my 1,200-calorie goal, but working out was hard. After last week’s debacle, I had to do something. So Pvt. Marissa reported for duty … duty on my booty. Oh yeah, I said it! :)
I normally am against any sort of boot camp type of thing but OMG I needed to be whipped into shape – and fast! The boot camp is at 6 a.m. so nothing will “come up.” My husband is home with Zev and no one will miss me for that hour! So off I went!
I found a cheap boot camp that was free for the first class. It was packed: I can’t believe how many people will wake up at 6 a.m. – crazy people, I tell you, lots of crazy people. It shocked me how much time was spent on our abs and arms and also how loud the music was. No teacher yelled at me but there was a crazy man that if we were told to “do 20” he would scream “25!” and everyone cheered. I hated this man and prayed he would not be back the next day. He was.
Boot camp seems to be good for me. It really had a good combination of weight training and cardio (jumping jacks and jump rope). Actually, the act of exercising at 6 a.m. really helped me. It made me not dread the workout part of my day all day long. Also, when I went to have a tiny cheat, I would really think back to how hard I worked and thought, “It is not worth going to boot camp an extra week over one peanut butter cup.”
I do think I am going to continue with the morning classes. I am going to look for morning yoga – I just feel like that’s something done in the early morning. I really liked being done with my workout by 7 a.m. and ready to start my day.
But there’s something I need to know: Why is there a popcorn machine at my dry cleaners????? Freshly popped salty popcorn with butter has nothing to do with my dry cleaning yet there it is every time I get something washed.
My biggest challenge this week: getting motivated.
I am most proud of: reporting for duty… duty on my booty – and actually coming up with that saying!
