After revealing just a year ago that he is a fortunate homosexual man, Ricky Martin spoke more about what a powerful experience coming out was at Saturday night’s GLAAD Media Awards.
“I’ve been through an intense spiritual process for the last five years, especially the last two years,” he told reporters in New York. “I needed to share it with the world.”
And it seems the rest of the world welcomed him with open arms. “My twitter account went from 500,000 to 1.8 million [followers]!” he said of his growing fan base, also calling it “an honor” to accept the Vito Russo Award, honoring openly gay and lesbian entertainers. “I’m walking today with my head up high, and to be here? To be receiving an award? I’ve only started.”
But the Livin’ La Vida Loca singer wants to get even more involved in spreading a message of love to the rest of Latin America. “Let’s share the love! Let’s go to Mexico! Let’s go to Columbia! Let’s go to Argentina! Let’s go to Chile! Let’s go to Brazil! We need you GLAAD – we need you down there,” he said. “I can help, I can do it! I’ll be part of it. I want to be part of it.
In the meantime, the Grammy-winning artist is preparing to go on tour – with his family in tow. “They’re ready,” he said of twin sons Matteo and Valentino, 2. “Grandma is coming with us. It’s going to be a very interesting tour.”
And it looks like his sons have already inherited some of dad’s famous footwork. “They were dancing since they were born. You know what, it’s in the blood. There’s always music in the house so I guess that’s part of it.”
