Sam Poueu has taken the next step on his road to recovery.
The season 9 Biggest Loser contestant, who was critically injured when he fell from the roof of a four-story apartment building in San Francisco on Sept. 3, has transferred to a rehabilitation facility, his family tells PEOPLE.
“He is undergoing an intense rehabilitation schedule. His recovery has been nothing short of a miracle,” the family, along with his fiancée Stephanie Anderson, say in a statement. “He has been blessed with a wonderful medical team.”
Poueu, 25, meanwhile, is staying positive in this next phase of treatment.
“Words can’t express how grateful I am for all the love, support and prayers I’ve received in the past six weeks, all of which have been instrumental in my healing and recovery process, and in keeping my spirits up,” he says in a statement to PEOPLE.
In his new facility, he’s facing physical, occupational and speech therapy.
“Witnessing his daily progress is the most hopeful and inspirational experience,” the family statement continues. “Tough days are still ahead – but, like always, he is working hard towards a full recovery. We are thankful for your continued thoughts, prayers and support.”
Poueu’s fall came when he attempted to climb down a fire escape at a friend’s apartment after being locked out while on the building’s rooftop, his family said. He suffered head trauma and internal injuries and went through three surgeries after the accident.
