Kicking things off, Adam paired popular Pip with former competitive swimmer Nathan Parrett to sing Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.” Blake appreciated Nathan’s “clear, strong voice” but said, “Pip’s the guy that can do everything.” Christina preferred Nathan’s voice, as did Cee Lo, who said he “had an effortless cool” like Winehouse herself. But Adam went with Pip because, he said, he is “just a natural performer.”
The most moving moment came at the end of the show, when Blake asked country singer Gwen Sebastian and the soulful Erin Willett to sing “We Belong” by Pat Benatar. Erin dedicated the performance to her father, who was diagnosed with stage-4 pancreatic cancer. She was told just before her battle that he had 24 hours to live.
Cee Lo said he loved Gwen’s “special and unique voice,” but Christina told Erin, “You have such power and strength in your vocals.” In the end, Blake chose Erin. “Your voice is so powerful, and part of me feels like you played it a little safe,” Blake told the singer, who couldn’t hold back tears. “But I can’t help but sit here and go, ‘Gosh, what else can she do?’ ”
Too Much Harmonizing?
When model Erin Martin went up against The Shields Brothers to sing Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to do With It,” Cee Lo worried the duo depended too much on harmonizing. “It frightens me a bit,” said the judge, who ultimately went with the more versatile Erin.
On Team Christina, the shy Ashley De La Rosa battled affable Jonathas, singing “No Air” by Jordin Sparks. Cee Lo, Adam and Blake all liked her range, and Christina agreed, advancing Ashley to the live shows. “I love the fact you incorporated that run that spoke to me as ‘You want this,’ ” Christina told her.
Shelton paired Alicia Keys backup singer Jermaine Paul against subdued pop singer ALyX for Billy Ocean’s “Get Out of My Dreams.” Blake gave ALyX credit for her confidence, but advanced Jermaine to the live shows.
Angel Taylor and Katritna Parker hit the stage for Team Adam to sing “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. Blake loved the break in Angel’s voice but said Katrina “just flat-out won.” Christina complimented Katrina on being a “multi-dimensional singer almost like an Adele.” Cee Lo said he’d choose Katrina, and Adam ultimately agreed.
The battles continue next week on The Voice.
