After more than a week in a coma, Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has woken up and is showing signs of recovery.
“Robin is fully conscious, lucid and able to speak to his loved ones,” his doctors said Sunday in a statement.
“He is breathing on his own, with an oxygen mask,” the statement continues. “He is on intravenous feeding and antibiotics. He is of course, exhausted, extremely weak and malnourished.”
Family members, including his wife Dwina and his children, have been “at his bedside every day, talking to him and playing his favorite music to him,” according to his doctors.
“They have been tireless in their determination never to give up on him,” the statement says. “The road ahead for Robin remains uncertain but it is a privilege to look after such an extraordinary human being.”
A statement on Gibb’s website last week confirmed reports he contracted pneumonia and was in a coma.
In October 2011, the singer, who is 62, fell ill with intestinal problems. He was later diagnosed with liver and colon cancer, but had made a recovery.
“It is testament to Robin’s extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now,” his doctors said Sunday of his improved condition.
