The victim of a taxi cab accident in New York City, in which one of her legs was severed, has been identified as Sian Green, a British tourist visiting the U.S. on what had been a dream trip.
A day after the incident, Wednesday, she continued to recover in a New York hospital after undergoing surgery as her family rushed to be by her side. Her condition was listed as critical, WNBC News reported Wednesday morning, along with saying that no charges have been filed against the cabdriver. Both he and the cyclist reportedly passed breathalyzer tests.
Green, 23, was visiting New York with pal Keshia Warren and had been in the city for only a day when the taxi swerved to avoid hitting a cyclist before the vehicle jumped the curb, plowing into Green as she was eating a hot dog in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center.
A student of fashion-buying at De Montfort University, Green is employed as a buyer trainee at Hugo Boss, reports the London Evening Standard.
Hero plumber David Justino, who rushed to her aid at the time of the incident and used his belt as a tourniquet to stanch the bleeding, described her as “a strong, brave girl” and fully conscious after the accident. She was also tended to by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, who happened to be on the street, which is near his office, until emergency rescue workers arrived.
Green had been so excited to visit the Big Apple that she charted the days leading up to her trip with an Instagram countdown and message that read: “New York plzzzzz hurry up!”
Green’s family, who lives in Leicester, was stunned by what happened to their daughter, the Telegraph reports.
“We are a really close family and we are all devastated by what has happened. We don’t know what to say … we just want to be at our daughter’s side right now,” Green’s father, Jason, told the paper. He said they hope to bring her home to recover.
Her boyfriend William Lord, who was on a trip of his own, to Ibiza, when the accident occurred, is also expected to fly to New York to be with her, according to the Daily Mail.
