Karina Smirnoff is a former Dancing with the Stars champion, winning the coveted mirror-ball trophy in season 13 with J.R. Martinez. The longtime competitor is blogging for PEOPLE about competing with former High School Musical star Corbin Bleu in season 17.
This Monday is a special week on the show. It’s called “The Most Memorable Year.” Every celebrity will choose a year in their life that they will talk about and explain why it’s an important year. So we’re mainly dedicating our dance to Corbin’s sisters, but also to someone who’s going through something in their lives. Our message we want to send for this week is: don’t lose hope, believe in your dreams and if you follow your heart they will come true.
I’m excited, but I’m a little nervous because it’s a bit intimidating. It’s a necessity for me to choreograph a dance that will have the feeling of inspiration and wanting to pursue your dreams, but when you dedicate it to family it puts extra pressure on the dancers so I’m a little nervous about this one.
Last week we really wanted people to see that we are not taking anything for granted and that we are not taking the easy way out. We are working hard and we are trying to get better every single time. So getting three 9’s was great, but would we have loved to have one 10? Absolutely! Who would ever say, ‘No I don’t want a 10, don’t give it to me?’ But we were excited and happy about how the dance went.
I do agree with Julianne. Corbin’s hips could have been in just a little more, but I mean, for the level of quality and technique that he produced Monday night I couldn’t have asked him to do a better job.
He went for it and he has a booty. That’s not a bad problem to have. He’s got a great booty and it’s a little extra work for him to tuck it under.
But in terms of hip-hop, I guess I understand Carrie Ann, because that’s what she’s looking for. I personally didn’t see it in this dance, but this is something he’s going to have to work through all season. He is known for dancing hip-hop and people are going to be looking for that.
The slap was so much fun! So I slap Corbin, he gets pissed off, he rips his vest off and he goes, ‘You b–h, I’m going to come and get you.’ I keep telling Corbin I just want to walk around slapping people now.
