Downton Abbey returns to PBS Sunday for a fourth season, and its stars’ various promotional appearances serve as a reminder that the aristocratic Crawleys and their downstairs staff look very different in real life.

Michelle Dockery

It’s unlikely that Lady Mary would rock a bold red lip, but Dockery pulls it off with aplomb.

Laura Carmichael

Lady Edith is long dismissed as a wallflower, but off-screen, Carmichael shines in glamorous getups.

Jessica Brown-Findlay

Pale skin may have been de rigueur for Edwardian aristocrats, but we prefer Lady Sybil with a sun-kissed glow.

Rob James-Collier

Troublemaker Thomas is usually up to no good, but his off-screen counterpart is just devilishly handsome.

Sophie McShera

Brunette beauty McShera is way more sophisticated than dowdy Daisy.

Dan Stevens

Stevens is equally dreamy with or without scruff.

Siobhan Finneran

Sporting free-flowing blond locks and a drapey dress, Finneran looks far less severe than the dour O’Brien.

Phyllis Logan

Head housekeeper Mrs. Hughes is too sensible for sequins.

Maggie Smith

As the hoity-toity Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, Smith favors immaculate finger waves, but her off-camera ‘do is lower-maintenance.

Penelope Wilton

Wilton, who plays Lady Violet’s nemesis Isobel, is also known to ditch her Downton updo.

Joanne Froggatt

Lady’s maid Anna is more frumpy than fashionable, but Froggatt is every bit the bombshell in a low-cut LBD.

Jim Carter

Carter’s style is downright jaunty compared to butler Carson’s staid attire.

Allen Leech

Leech, also known as former chauffeur Tom Branson, cleans up quite nicely on the red carpet.

Brendan Coyle

Coyle, who plays brooding valet Bates, looks chipper in sharp specs and a printed shirt.

Hugh Bonneville

Bonneville and the Earl of Grantham appear similarly stately in neckwear.

Elizabeth McGovern

McGovern may sport some lavish ensembles as Crawley matriarch Cora, but the actress opts for sleek, modern designs in real life.
