Who says you can’t go home?

Isaiah Washington will return to Grey’s Anatomy this spring for one episode, an ABC spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE. Washington, who played Dr. Preston Burke for three seasons, was fired from the show in 2007 after his comments about former Grey’s costar T.R. Knight’s sexuality.

Viewers saw Washington’s exit from the show when Burke left his fiancée, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) at the altar. This spring, Oh will be leaving the hit drama, now in its tenth season.

“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes said in a statement. “Burke is vital to that journey – he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”

Washington currently stars in the CW show The 100, which premieres March 19.
