April 14 is Ex-Spouse Day, a special time to reminisce about the one person you’re probably sick of thinking about.

Here’s another option: Instead of ruminating on personal relationship pitfalls, reflect on the wild world of celebrity breakups. From conscious uncouplings to legal brawls, stars’ separations are often dramatic.

There are various ways for a celeb to turn a main squeeze into a former fling – the dreaded text message send-off included. In remembrance of Hollywood’s exes, here are six recurring types of celebrity splits. Where do you and your ex fit?

The "Uncool"

The Breakup: Taken from Jennifer Aniston’s post-split dig at Angelina Jolie, the “Uncool” is a separation where apparent dalliances with a third party are the source of turmoil. Sometimes the cheating rumors turn out to be nothing … and other times, the ex moves in with the suspected party and starts adopting kids.

The Couples: Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren, Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan

The Second Time Around

The Breakup: Once isn’t always enough. After parting ways with their famous partners, a few brave celebs have given their relationships another go. Unfortunately, some of these renewed romances can’t beat out the bad blood and get a second split to match.

The Couples: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson, Katy Perry and John Mayer

The Texty Ex

The Breakup: Stars aren’t immune to this cruel and quick goodbye. A surprising number of celebs have let one text message – perhaps, with a few emojis – do the legwork in their breakup.

The Couples: Russell Brand and Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, Carrie Underwood and Chace Crawford

The Inspiration

The Breakup: Have a bit of writer’s block? Take a note from these stars and ditch your current relationship to get those creative juices flowing. Sure, love hurts, but all the money you earn from your heartache will make it better.

The Couples: Taylor Swift and almost any former boyfriend, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham

The Critical Damage

The Breakup: In these Code Red catastrophes, what may have started as a civil union quickly disintegrates into a no-mercy firefight. Secrets are spilled, accusations are hurled and no blow is too low. When it’s all over (if it ever is), everyone is left to wonder how these couples made it work in the first place

The Couples: Charlie Sheen and anyone, Dina Lohan and Michael Lohan, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

The Conscious Uncoupling

The Breakup: As Gwyneth Paltrow would say, “By choosing to handle your uncoupling in a conscious way, regardless of what’s happening with your spouse, you’ll see that although it looks like everything is coming apart; it’s actually all coming back together.” Simply put, it’s a celebrity split that shocked us, but we later realized was a well thought-out and responsible decision.
