Alexa Ray Joel is back on her feet again, after suffering a collapse mid-song during a show at New York City’s Café Carlyle last weekend.
“I’m doing fine. I’m great, and I’m standing,” she told Extra on Wednesday. “I do tend to get a little bit of a low blood sugar drop. I was working shows in a row. You know it happens, singing is a physical act. I think I was just building up my stamina and it was a lot of shows in a row. Hey, life happens.”
But it’s with the help of her fans that she’s been recuperating quickly.
“I really appreciate that everybody has been so respectful and not putting any salacious slant on the whole story,” Joel, 28, says. “Everyone has been so caring and sweet and supportive. I’m getting all these messages on Facebook and social media of everyone asking how I’m doing. I really appreciate it. It’s helping me actually recover.”
The daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition that blocks blood from flowing to the brain and causes fainting.
“I was excited and determined to fulfill my final performance,” the star said in a statement to PEOPLE shortly after she collapsed. “I really wanted to end my run with a bang, but this was not what I had in mind and hope I have the opportunity to make it up to the wonderful audience very soon. Thanks for all the concern.”
