and are first spotted together at the Chateau Marmont in August – and so begins the couple’s whirlwind seven-month courtship that seemed to flame out by March. Although they appear wild about each other initially, they quickly hit a bump in the road leading to their first split by the end of the month. “They were honestly having fun,” a source told PEOPLE. “People made it out to be far more than it was.”
It’s a double dose of birthday bliss for the on-again couple, who both mark their milestones in October. When Mayer turns 35 on the 16th, the two head to N.Y.C.’s ABC Kitchen for a celebratory dinner, according to Entertainment Weekly. Days later, Perry and Mayer keep the party going when they get super hot (and supernatural) for the recently divorced Perry’s L.A. costume bash in honor of her 28th.
After ringing in the New Year together in Hawaii, Mayer and Perry bring their romance to Washington, D.C., for President Barack Obama’s January inauguration (which includes a patriotic performance from Perry). It was also a milestone month for Mayer, who, days prior, took the stage for the first time in 20 months after struggling with vocal cord problems.
Following months of low-key dating, Mayer goes public about Perry on CBS Sunday Morning. “I don’t feel like I’m in a celebrity relationship,” he says, while also admitting he “was just a jerk” for his past foot-in-the-mouth antics (which notably preceded his 2009 breakup with Aniston). The duo cap off the month by attending the Grammys together. And just weeks before leading separate lives, Mayer presents Perry with a heart-shaped stunner for Valentine’s Day. Perhaps his 2001 song “St. Patrick’s Day” aptly sums up the couple’s romance: “And we’ll both be safe ‘til St. Patrick’s Day.”
