Sitcoms have given us so much – laughs, convoluted misunderstandings and even life lessons. But on occasion, they also broke from the typical formula and gave us a few scares. Sometimes they did it to celebrate Halloween. Sometimes they just did it to freak out children in the audience who might not be in on the joke.

Dick Van Dyke: New Wife, New Life!

For much of his career, Dick Van Dyke was known for his youthful energy. So it’s little wonder that when the Mary Poppins actor turned 87 last December, he and wife Arlene celebrated with a trip to Disneyland.

“What a kick!” says Van Dyke, recounting palling around with Mickey Mouse and receiving a serenade from the L.A. Philharmonic. “We were treated like royalty.”

Five Emmys, a Tony, a Grammy – and he’s won the hearts of millions. Now, Dick Van Dyke is to receive his acting union’s highest honor: the Screen Actors Guild’s Life Achievement Award.

The tireless actor, 86, who’s as comfortable with doing slapstick as he is with being suave, will be honored in January for his 60-year-plus career and his lifelong humanitarian accomplishments.

“Dick is the consummate entertainer – an enormously talented performer whose work has crossed nearly every major category of entertainment, says SAG-AFTRA co-president Ken Howard.
