First Look: Diane Lane in Secretariat

Break out the mint juleps and the giant hats: Secretariat is coming to the big screen.

Based on the real-life 1973 Triple Crown winner, the film – which will hit theaters in October – stars Diane Lane as Penny Chenery, a wife and mother whose determination helped lead Secretariat to victory.

“She was a very savvy businesswoman,” says Lane, 45, who to prepare for the role spent time with Chenery, now 88. John Malkovich plays Secretariat’s trainer Lucien Lauren.

Malkovich: Local Hero

John Malkovich broke up a street fight in Madrid (where he is directing his first movie, “The Dancer Upstairs”), to the cheers of passers-by. Driving through the Spanish city on Sept. 20, the actor noticed that two drivers had left their vehicles and were punching and shoving each other over who had the right-of-way. Malkovich, 46, got out of his car, took off his coat and dragged the two apart, the El Pais newspaper reports.
