When Maura Tierney was diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer in 2009, she kept the details of her treatment relatively private – until now.

“I remember thinking, ‘I’m so young, this can’t be happening,’ ” Tierney, 47, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, on newsstands now. “It was an odd moment.”

After undergoing a skin-sparing mastectomy – a procedure that leaves the skin intact for reconstructive surgery – Tierney was shocked to learn that she also required three months of regular chemotherapy.

Maura Tierney revealed Monday that she will be having surgery to remove a breast tumor.

“In an effort to guard my privacy, it seems that the wording of NBC’s press release has unfortunately caused some confusion and undue alarm about my health,” Tierney, 44, said in a statement regarding her “illness,” which NBC Universal announced Friday was delaying production of her new series, Parenthood.

Maura Tierney Goes from ER to the Firehouse

On the night ER’s County General shut its doors for good, Maura Tierney hit the town in support of her new show, the FX firefighter drama Rescue Me.

At Thursday’s New York season-five premiere and Rescue Me Comedy Tour, benefiting the Leary Firefighters Foundation, Tierney, 44, told PEOPLE of the ER finale, “I haven’t seen it. I’m TiVoing it. There was a party this weekend, so I got to see everybody and say goodbye.” And, she adds with a laugh, “I’ve moved on!”

ER Star Maura Tierney, Husband Split

ER actress Maura Tierney has filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years.

The actress, who also starred on the sitcom NewsRadio, cites irreconcilable differences with her husband, actor Billy Morrissette, in court papers filed in Los Angeles.

Tierney, 41, and Morrissette, 43, have been separated since March 7, according to the papers. They have no children.

New Stars in 'ER'

In an effort to shore up sagging ratings, “ER” will soon welcome Rebecca DeMornay, Alan Alda and Maura Tierney to the halls of County General Memorial Hospital. Variety reports that DeMornay (“The Hand That Rocks the Cradle”) has signed on to make her first foray into series TV with an initial five-episode story arc. (Alda will also appear in five episodes, while Tierney is in the final stages of negotiations about her guest shot.) Debuting on the “ER” season premiere, DeMornay will play a socialite who becomes romantically entangled with Noah Wyle’s character.
