As authorities continue to investigate Friday’s horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., details are beginning to emerge about the alleged gunman.
A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that the shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza.
Although Adam Lanza wasn’t named during a Friday afternoon press conference, Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance told reporters, “The shooter is deceased inside the building.”
Vance put the death toll at 28 total: 20 children, six adults, the gunman and his mother.
There were conflicting reports about whether his mother, Nancy Lanza, had a connection to the school. She was variously identified as a kindergarten teacher, substitute teacher, employee and having no ties to the school at all.
Nancy Lanza was found dead at a residence in town, CNN reports.
Lanza’s brother, Ryan, and their father was taken into custody for questioning by police in New Jersey, but were not named as suspects.
