The eye’s had it.
Matt Lauer may not be going for gold, but the longtime Today show host will be pinch-hitting for buddy Bob Costas Tuesday as the NBC Winter Olympics host takes a night off to battle an icky-looking eye infection, which has forced him to wear Harry Potter-style glasses on air.
“Let’s hope it’s only tonight,” Costas, 61, told Lauer live on Today Tuesday. “I’m walking around, I might as well be playing ‘Marco Polo.’ I have no idea where I am.”
“I’m happy to keep his chair warm, although I might Purell it before I sit in it,” Lauer jokingly replied.
Costas is something of an Olympic institution. No one else has anchored a prime-time summer or winter Olympic broadcast in the U.S. since 1998, when CBS had the rights to broadcast the games.
On NBC’s late-night telecast, Costas shared a vodka toast with correspondent Mary Carillo and said, “I’m looking at it this way … my eyes can’t get any redder.”
