Scarlett, the Calico cat that made headlines in 1996 for braving a raging fire in a Brooklyn garage to save her tiny 4-week-old kittens, passed away recently.

The stray feline pulled her 5 kittens to safety and suffered severe burns in the blaze. Her heroism captured the hearts of people around the world, including Oprah Winfrey who talked about the cat on her show. Scarlett's story inspired non-fiction books, including one by Jane Martin and J.C. Suarez, available on Amazon.

Following the fire, New York's North Shore Animal League received 7,000 adoption inquiries for Scarlett and her kittens. The dedicated mother was adopted by Karen Wellen of Brooklyn, New York, and lived the rest of her life comfortably.

"She was the most precious and loving cat, and in our household, it was all about Scarlett," Wellen said in a statement.
