If you don't think you can pick up enough of Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan's training methods on his TV show -- or you don't have cable- - you might be interested in his new DVD set, which is more like a class. Instead of watching Millan train dogs out of problems that might not be relevant to your family, with the DVD series Mastering Leadership, you sit in on a seminar. The DVDs have a lower production value than Millan's show The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel, but they go over his philosophy more methodically.
The classroom of dog owners on the DVD is tutored in his message that dogs need exercise, then discipline, then affection. Millan preaches becoming a calm, assertive presence. If you want to see what it's like to be calm and assertive, watch Oprah, he tells them; she is a master.
Millan is so busy now he no longer offers one-on-one training. Even the waiting list is closed. And his seminars and other appearances are rare.
The Mastering Leadership three DVD sells for $40 on CesarMilllan.com . Sessionswithcesar.com offers an online course for $80 a quarter or $150 a year.
In his ever-expanding merchandise line, Millan now offers three kinds of Dog Whisperer treats to go along with his three dog needs of exercise, discipline and affection.
The beef-based "Discipline" definitely came first with my dog Jolly and two of his girlfriends, Rosie and Shadow. Jolly wouldn't eat the other two kinds of biscuit-type treats unless the girls were visibly enjoying them–and then only nibbled. Both girls preferred the "Affection" treat, which is big, heart-shaped and improbably flavored with green tea. The "Exercise" treat, which has organic chicken as its third ingredient, was no one's favorite.
