Kerry Washington is the latest person to weigh in on the growing national debate: What kind of dog should the Obamas get? The actress – who is good friends with the Illinois Senator, and even celebrated his victory with him in Chicago – has been campaigning for them to adopt a Shorkie (a mix between a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie).
"My dog is hypoallergenic, and I've told them all about her," Washington – the proud owner of a Shorkie named Josephine Baker – tells PEOPLE. "They are loving dogs and great for the girls. So we'll see what they will choose."
The President-elect promised daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, a puppy in his acceptance speech. He has said the "dog must be hypoallergenic" and that he'd prefer a "shelter dog."
Washington, 31, is close with the entire Obama family, and she even spent Election Night celebrating with them behind the scenes.
"I was in Chicago last week and I couldn't stop giggling backstage with Michelle," she said at the L'Oreal Legends Gala in New York Monday, an event to raise funds for ovarian cancer research. "After the big speech, they had tents backstage and we were all toasting and celebrating."
"They are both absolutely amazing," Washington continued. "We are so lucky to have such a cool couple ... in the White House. Not only are they brilliant and gorgeous but they are just cool, down-to-earth people."
In fact, the actress – who portrayed Ray Charles's wife, Della B. Robinson, in Ray – said she'd be "flattered and honored" to play Michelle in a movie. She does, however, have one condition.
"If they can find a short enough guy to play Barack, then I can play her," she said. "They are just such tall, elegant people. ... I could [only] be the mini version of Michelle!"
