It was a sad day here at PEOPLE Pets when we heard that Gus, a Chinese crested who won the title of "World's Ugliest Dog," passed away in Gulfport, Fla., on Nov. 10. The loving pup was 9 years old, and spent his last night on the beach with his owner Jeanenne Teed, before losing his long battle with cancer. Though he had only one eye and three legs, the pooch won the hearts of many after winning the title in 2007.
Though the $1600 in prize money was a big sum to his owner, she ended up putting the cash – and her October mortgage – toward chemotherapy to treat Gus's cancer. When veterinarians told her that he only had a few days left, Jeanenne took Gus, then shivering and hiccupping for air, on one last trip to the beach, where they'd gone to celebrate after he'd won his title last year.
Though he wasn't eating or drinking, and had lost five pounds – half his body weight – she wanted him to have one final evening of joy. The next morning, Jeanenne wrapped him in a blue blanket and took him to the vet, where he drew his final breaths. He's now buried in the Teed's backyard, under a flowering Butterfly bush. "Something beautiful," Teed told the St. Petersburg Times
. "to grow out of all that ugly."
