The dogs that recovered from Michael Vick's dog fighting ring are getting some help from wine lovers. The Dog Lovers Wine Club, just introduced the Vicktory Dogs Collection, which features portraits of the dogs and donates 10% for each sale to the Best Friends Animal Society, where the dogs live.
Artist Cyrus Mejia, a co-founder of Best Friends, painted portraits of the 22 pit bulls as part of a project on Pits and Perception. The close-ups of their faces show a huge variety of colors and expressions.
Of the 47 pits who survived Michael Vick's horrifying dog fighting operation, Best Friends took the 22 considered the most abused, least adoptable. Still, Best Friends works with these emotionally and physically scarred animals incessantly to let them at least lead more comfortable lives.
The money from the wine will go to help other pit-related causes, Best Friends says, including "legislative campaigns to end dog fighting and combating breed-specific legislation."
The wine sells for $40 a bottle, $380 for a case of 12.
