Australian Meerkats Produce First Babies in Nine Years

The Taronga Zoo in Syndey, Australia showed off its two four-week-old meerkat babies this week. Zanzibar and Nairobi are the first meerkats born at the zoo in nine years. They're the product of a program of swapping meerkats at zoos to promote genetic diversity. Their mother, Malawi, moved to Syndey from the Mogo Zoo in New South Wales in 2007.

"They're confident little things, very precocious" said their caretake Bobby-Jo Vial to the Australian This gang of meerkats, which now numbers nine, was featured on the Australian TV show The Zoo when the new females were introduced.
