Dog that Survived Crash Gets a Plane Ticket Home
A 1-year-old basenji mix named Zak miraculously survived a truck crash on Interstate 80 in Omaha with his owner, and now, because of the kindness of others, he'll be reunited with his family in San Diego today.

The dog has been stranded in Omaha since Sunday, according to the Omaha World-Herald, after his owner, truck driver Robert J. Shields, died following a crash. The Shield's family couldn't afford to have their dog flown home, so the Nebraska Humane Society put out the call for help. Since then, the phones have been ringing off the hook and donations came rolling in.

Luck struck a second time when an American Airlines employee heard about Zak's situation and helped arrange a flight home at no cost to the family. If all goes as planned the dog arrive in San Diego on Wednesday evening.

A Humane Society spokeswoman told the Omaha World-Herald that the family is very happy to hear that Zak is on his way. After all Zak has been through, it's good to hear that he'll be flying the friendly skies in comfort: the donations collected will be used to pay for the dog's shipping crate and a bed.
