It hasn't been an easy year for Gossip Girl star Kelly Rutherford, whose divorce from Daniel Giersch has made headlines. But the pregnant star – and mom to son Hermes, 2 – has a positive force in her life she can always count on: Her Australian cattle dog, Oliver, who does a great job of making her smile on a regular basis.
"He's just such a joy, he makes me smile all of the time, my little Oliver," she told PEOPLE at a New York City event sponsored by the cleaning product company Seventh Generation. The actress, whose second child is due in June, is often spotted around town with her little loves Hermes and Oliver (right). She says she recently read a book that helped her understand her connection to her dog and children.
"I was just reading the Eckhart Tolle book, Stillness Speaks, and he talks about how the best way to get in touch with things is to be around animals, nature, kids," she says. "Because it puts you in direct contact with our 'god nature' or however you want to call it."
