Nursing Cat Adopts Baby Squirrel into Litter
He may not "meow" or "purr," but one baby squirrel is growing up just like a kitten. Volunteers for the Fayetteville, Ark., animal shelter recently found an abandoned baby squirrel, whom they believe took a tumble from a tree. Since there wasn't a squirrel in the shelter to nurse him, workers introduced him to a family of kittens and a nursing cat – and a new family was formed.

"I just rubbed the squirrel against the other babies and then he just took a nose dive into all the kittens sleeping," Fayetteville Animal Services volunteer Carole Gerle told the local news. "Mom looked at him and said, 'What's one more?' " Gerle says the mother cat, Tessa, doesn't seem to notice the difference, and if she does, she doesn't mind.

After he gets a bit bigger, volunteers plan to bring the squirrel to a wildlife rehab center.
