He's not in Arkansas anymore! A lucky 20-month-old brindle-hair Cairn terrier named Nigel was just cast as Toto in the New York City Center Encores! Summer Stars production of The Wiz. Nigel, an Arkansas native who was picked off the Humane Society of New York Web site by animal scout and trainer Bill Berloni, is currently starring in a Pittsburgh-area high school production of The Wizard of Oz.
In a statement released to the New York Times, Berloni said: "After thirty years of rescuing dogs for Broadway shows which began with Sandy (who shot to stardom in the original production of Annie), I know talent when I see it. After speaking to the shelter about his personality I knew he had star potential. I predict a great future for him."
Nigel will star Off-Broadway – alongside R&B star Ashanti in the role of Dorothy – from June 12 through July 5.
