We all know that Fido or Fluffy's farts can be just as bad and linger longer than the human variety. They may even be more embarrassing when they happen unexpectedly in front of others (and gas masks are not readily available!). So, how to handle this, um, silent but deadly dilemma?
Dr. Louise Murray, director of medicine at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York, says that pet flatulence could be a sign of a medical issue, so it may be time to visit your vet. "It means that they're having trouble digesting something," she says.
To find out what that culprit is, first cut out treats, snacks and any people food. If nothing changes, it may be time to zero in on your pet's food. "Think about what's going inside a pet's mouth," she says. "It's not just a funny thing. It's something that might indicate a problem."
