When Max saw the family car being packed up, he made like luggage and hopped on in! "He was concerned," Anita Smith, the 5-year-old Lab's owner, tells PEOPLE Pets. "He saw the car being loaded and just wanted to be sure he was going wherever everyone else was going. It didn't really matter where, he just wanted to go."
This canine may act like a carry-on, but he's really a pro at searching bags. The first thing he does when he meets people "is look to see if they have any treats, " says Smith. "We have caught him numerous times searching purses."
Those keen senses make Max a great guard dog. "When someone knocks on the door he barks, but he calms down immediately as soon as he is told it's a friend," Smith says.
Max "loves people" but squirrels are definitely not his chums. "He does not want the birds or squirrels in his yard," explains Smith. "He once spotted a squirrel too close to one of his tennis balls and I was worried that he might hurt the squirrel but he didn't. He just chased it out of the yard."
So now, when squirrels mosey into Max's territory, the pooch has a strategy. "He will run out into the yard and pick up all his tennis balls in his mouth, a couple at a time, and bring them up on to the back porch," says Smith. "I guess he doesn't want to take any chances."
Good thinking, Max! The trunk might be a good place to hide them.
