A farmer in Flamisoul, Belgium, must have done a double take last week when he watched one of his cows gave birth to a two-headed calf.
Jean-Baptiste Collard was helping his cow birth her baby, but called a veterinarian when things became complicated, reports the U.K.'s Telegraph. "The calf seemed too big," Collard told the paper. "The legs came out first, so we put a rope around them and pulled the calf out, as usual. But then the vet cried out, 'It has two heads!' "
Indeed, the baby calf was born with two heads, two noses, two mouths, four eyes and two ears in total. "After an hour, I could slowly give it a bottle of milk," Collard said. "That's when I noticed both tongues react at the same time." As it turns out, the calf was born with just one brain, causing its two heads to react simultaneously to any kind of stimulus.
"I hope it goes well," Collard said. "I'm already attached to it, it's like a baby to me. And I see the mother is also crazy about her." As of now, both mom and baby are fine, though the vet says the week-old calf's future remains uncertain.
