Stars Bring Furry 'Best Friends' to Animal Society's 25th Anniversary Party
The real excitement was on the red carpet, though, where Twilight star – and Best Friends spokesperson – Rachelle Lefevre strolled with her 5-month-old rescue dog, Honey. Now planning to adopt a second dog from Best Friends, the actress said she and boyfriend Jamie Thomas King are hoping to finish training Honey soon. "We definitely split duties, but we trained her in the beginning and tapered off as she got older," she tells PEOPLEPets.com. "Now she knows all of her commands."
Actress Autumn Reeser (above, The O.C.) also brought her pup, a 5-year-old Papillon named Gatsby. "We didn't adopt him, but if I were to do it again I would have rescued a dog," she says. "He's pretty wonderful, though. We'll probably be getting a second dog this winter – and this time we will be adopting. I went to Best Friends last year to help with their dogs and saw what they do. It's really incredible."
The Best Friends Animal Society works with rescue organizations across the country, taking in homeless pets who are at greatest risk – abused, abandoned and special-needs animals who are often not adopted in shelters due to advanced age, behavioral troubles, illness or injury. About 2,000 dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, horses and other animals live at the sanctuary in southern Utah, many waiting to be adopted into loving homes. On Saturday, the organization paid tribute to Katherine Heigl – a proud dog owner who works closely with the Society – and presented awards to myriad stars and civilians for their rescue work, as well.
House star Lisa Edelstein made room in her home for two dogs from Best Friends, one of whom she adopted just a few weeks ago. "It's only been two weeks so they just kind of co-existed for the first week and now they are really starting to play," she says of the new siblings, who stayed home that night. For Edelstein, there's nothing quite like adopting a rescue animal. "You're saving them and they know it," she shares. "It's a wonderful relationship ... the joy and the loyalty that comes after that is outrageous."
