After 18 years of not knowing her family, Jaycee Dugard is now getting to know them again–with the help of some animals.

Now 29, Dugard, who was kidnapped in 1991 and was held in captivity until this September, is spending time in Northern California with daughters Angel, 15, and Starlit, 11, and her mother, Terry Probyn. Together in seclusion, they're catching up and sharing meals at the table, and catching some fresh air riding horseback.

The family, often joined by Dugard's half-sister Shayna Probyn, is taking riding sessions as part of the ongoing healing process, according to family spokesperson Erika Price Schulte. The group often heads out on horses with the therapist who has been treating Dugard and her daughters.

"Horse therapy is part of the reunification therapy they're going through," Schulte tells PEOPLE. "Jaycee and the girls really love horses."
