For every pet living with a happy family, there is an animal in a shelter waiting to find a loving home. So today, in honor of Adopt a Senior Pet month, we'd like you to meet Sandy, a 10-year-old yellow Lab living at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.
Sandy is the oldest of 36 dogs rescued from an abandoned farm in Johnson County, Iowa, in June. Her previous owner was a breeder, who one day moved from his home, leaving several dogs and puppies alone in an empty house without food or water. She was found roaming, and was neglected, scared and hungry. "We brought her to our shelter and in just a few days, her true personality began to show," Liz Ford, executive director for Friends of the Animal Center Foundation, tells PEOPLEPets.com. "Her demeanor changed from a shy, cautious dog to a dog that is happy and eager to please." A favorite of shelter volunteers, Sandy loves to play ball, go for walks and snuggle. "She knows 'sit' and loves stuffy toys and treats," Ford says. Sandy would do best in a home without cats, but could adjust to male dogs or children of any age. "She loves routine and enjoys the people that come to see her," Ford adds.
The volunteer-run Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center serves all of Johnson County, Iowa. Looking after 2,600 animals per year, the organization provides animal sheltering, fostering, animal control and numerous community outreach and education programs.
As with any shelter, the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is always in need of donations, so visit their Web site to learn how you can help!
