Dean Koontz is known for his dark, twisting suspense thrillers. But for the holidays, he toned it down a notch – or several! – to "co-write" Christmas is Good! Trixie's Guide to a Happy Holiday ($16.99) with his late golden retriever, Trixie, in 2005. The silly book, just rereleased in hardcover, examines Christmas from a pet's point of view, with items like sausages, meatballs and more sausages as the focal point of the holiday.

Broken down into categories like, "Things for Dogs to Do at Christmas" (sing carols for food, go sledding) and "Tips for Dogs for a Happier Christmas" (if caught being naughty, look cute!), it's a fun read for kids and dog-lovers alike. It also reminds humans to take care of their four-legged friends around the holidays, asking them to leave those cooling pumpkin pies on the edge of the counter, and of course, give generous gifts to their pets (sausages preferred).

But the best part of the book is that it gives back: All proceeds are donated to Canine Companions for Independence, the organization where the Koontz family adopted Trixie from. Though Trixie has since passed – she contracted terminal cancer in 2007 – Koontz continues to write in her honor, most recently in his memoir, A Big Little Life. We hope the perky pup is enjoying a Christmas sausage or two in doggie heaven right now.
