It's so nice in theory: The Doog Walkie Belt is a cute, functional, all-in-one piece that keeps your stuff, plus your dog's stuff, all in one place when you're out for a walk. When the pooch has done her business, the bio-degradable, strawberry-scented bags are right there in the belt pocket. When you're done picking it up, you can wipe your hands clean with some antibacterial wipes, in the other belt pocket. When you want to play fetch, clip the leash on the belt's carabineer. Sounds great, right?
The answer is mostly. The Walkie Belt ($24.99) comes from Doog, an Australian outdoor dog product company that recently began selling in the U.S. The belt looks like a wider, flatter version of a fanny pack, and was constructed with the dog-owner's convenience in mind. In addition to the bags and the wipes, there's a compartment for your keys and your loose change, even a spot for you to clip your phone (which necessitates you having a clip on your phone ... Anyone?).
Basically, the Walkie Belt, while well-intentioned, feels like a product born out of artificial demand. I was doing fine with my coat pockets to hold my keys and phone, and the bag dispenser on my leash is actually more accessible in my hand than the the bags in the Walkie Belt down on my waist. Do I really need a pink-and-brown polka dot fanny pack to hold all the things that I didn't ever feel needed holding?
It might just be my nature – I tend to be scattered and organizational products from places like The Container Store are generally of no use to me. The nice part is that the dog doesn't care one bit – she just wants to run around and play!
