My cat Atticus loves attention, so when mine is directed elsewhere, he's not above going for an interception. On Election Night he jumped up in front of the TV while Obama was delivering his historic acceptance speech. And he's even tried to sit on the cutting board while I chop veggies. One of his favorite places is on my laptop keyboard while I'm working at home. His heavy paw likes to insert "llllllllllll" mid-sentence in open documents, and he's managed to compose a tweet and post it to my Twitter page. Well, his butt did anyway.
When I saw the Kitt-In Box I was skeptical about whether he'd ever get in it. He has a $40 scratching post that has never been used, but he has shredded the side of our couch at home with his claws. His cat bed is cold and vacant, but he'll sleep on a sweater my roommate left on the couch and leave it full of fur.
So, it came as no surprise that when I opened up the Kitt-In Box Atticus was much more interested in the packaging than the product itself. That gave me the chance to assemble it and place it on my desk. I stuck on the self-adhesive rubber stoppers on the bottom so the box wouldn't scratch the surface of my desk and put the cushion in its washable slip and into the box.
After a couple days and sufficient sniffing, Atticus climbed into the Kitt-In Box, did a little turn and sat down for a long nap. Since then, when he's not running around the apartment earning his nickname "Erraticus," he's snoozing in his KIB. (It has a nickname now too!) Since then, I put together the clamp the KIB came with to attach it to the desk – in my case, an old kitchen table – so that it doesn't take up too much of my workspace. The birch finish is also a perfect match for my little office, so my Feng Shui-conscious boyfriend isn't offended. (It also comes in cherry and mahogany.)
And best of all, when I have the chance to work from home, Atticus can be right there next to me, sleeping in his KIB instead of on top of some paper or other item I can't find.
