In March, PEOPLEPets.com introduced you to a pit bull named Sugar, who'd been through a lot in just three years of life. The sweet natured pooch had suffered acid burns and internal infections, possibly related to a back-alley C-section. Though volunteers desperately devoted time and money to her rescue, sadly, she passed away recently following health complications after emergency surgery.
Since Sugar was so special, pal Kim Rodgers of Bark Pet Photography created a pewter tag in her honor, as a thank-you gift to those who'd donated money to her medical care. But the delicate charms were so popular, Rodgers decided to start selling them as a way to memorialize the brave pup – and help recoup the $8,000 in medical expenses paid by Sugar's rescuers from Molly's Mutts & Meows.
"We thought it would be a beautiful way to spread the story of Sugar's rehabilitation," Rodgers tells PEOPLEPets.com. "The words 'forgive, trust, love' imprinted on the tag truly capture the essence of her journey. We hope to open the minds of those who think abused dogs cannot be rehabilitated through these tags."
Available through Bark Pet Photography for $25, they're a lovely way to commemorate a remarkable pup – and remind others how precious each animal's life really is.
